Leaders of the Satmar Hasidic community in Brooklyn announced on Sunday that they are backing Zohran Mamdani for mayor of New York City.
The endorsement was delivered at an event in Williamsburg along Brooklyn leader Rabbi Moshe Indig to Mamdani in person. Mamdani said on Twitter that he was honored to receive the endorsement and ”Together, we will fight the scourge of antisemitism and build a city that works for every New Yorker.”
In an open letter to their followers published on Wednesday, the Satmar leadership highlighted Mamdani’s gestures that addressed their concerns. They noted that the Democratic nominee said he would protect Hasidic yeshivas facing scrutiny over state education standards. They also said Hasidic families would benefit from his proposals to expand affordable housing and establish universal childcare.
The endorsement marks a break from the group’s previous support for disgraced Gov. Andrew Cuomo. This also comes as President Donald Trump and Elon Musk, who gave a Nazi salute during a Trump rally, endorsed Cuomo.
Election Day is Tuesday, November 4, 2025. Polls are open from 6am to 9pm in New York.
